VENICE

Venice had been for more than a millennium capital of the Republic of Venice and is known in this respect as the "Serenissima".
Venice is universally considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world for its urban characteristics and for the invaluable heritage and ranks among the world heritage protected by the UNESCO.
The municipality extends over most of the Lagoon of Venice, but also over the surrounding land, including the greater metropolitan area that has as its centre in Mestre.
The heart of the city of Venice is Piazza San Marco. The Basilica of San Marco is at the centre of the square, coloured in gold and covered with mosaics.
The Palazzo Ducale is located next to the Basilica: the Porta della Carta, by Bartolomeo Bon, unites them and today is the output of the Museum of Palazzo Ducale.
The Campanile of San Marco is located in front of the Ducal Palace: it was built in 1173 as a beacon for sailors.
The Rialto Bridge is another symbol of the city: it is a work of Antonio Da Ponte and it was built in 1591. It was the only way to cross the Canal Grande on foot.
